Will I Pass My Class?

How It Works

This calculator finds the minimum final exam score needed to reach your school's passing grade:

Minimum Score = (Passing Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight

Example: current grade 58%, passing is 60%, final worth 30%:

(60 − 58 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 65.3%

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing grade at most colleges?

Most colleges consider 60% (a D) the minimum passing grade, though some courses or programs require a C (70%) or higher. Check your syllabus or student handbook for your school's specific policy.

What if I need over 100% to pass?

That means your current grade is too low to pass even with a perfect score on the final. Talk to your professor immediately about extra credit, an incomplete grade, or withdrawal options.

Will I pass my class if I fail the final?

It depends on how much the final is worth. Enter a score of 0 in our Final Exam Calculator to see what your course grade would be if you scored zero on the final.

What happens if I fail a class?

You may need to retake the course, and the F will impact your GPA. Some schools allow grade forgiveness when retaking. Use our GPA Calculator to see the impact.

What is the minimum grade to pass a class?

Typically 60% for a D grade at most institutions, but graduate programs often require a B (83%) or higher. Always verify with your specific program requirements.
